Es beginnt in New Hampshire im Jahr 1954. In einem Flößer- und Holzfällercamp lebt der zwölfjährige Danny mit seinem Vater Dominic. Dominic ist der Koch und zaubert seine eigenen Kreationen. Eines Nachts verwechselt Danny die Geliebte seines Vaters mit einem Bären und erschlägt sie ausversehen. Mit der Hilfe eines Freundes flüchten die Beiden und beginnen ein neues Leben. Für Dominic eine neue Küche, neue Gerichte und für Beide neue Namen und neue Identität. Aber der gehörnte Mann der Toten lässt nicht locker und verfolgt die Spuren und taucht plötzlich wieder auf und Vater und Sohn müssen erneut fliehen und wieder einmal ganz neu beginnen. John Irving ist ein Zauberer der Worte und mit dieser großartigen Geschichte ist ihm wieder einmal ein großer Wurf gelungen. Spannung, Tragik, Komik und ganz viel Menschlichkeit.
