We enter into a strange, medieval-like world, but one we seem to recognize thanks to such precursors as Earthsea, Gormenghast, and Kafka. Rourke's central character, Konrad, is a mix of the Pied Piper, Mage, Steerpike, and Isa, from the Mullah Nasrudin legends. One day a stranger comes to Aln from the City which governs the province. The country is ruled by the Electi, a secretive theocratic hierarchy, but Aln has managed to maintain some degree of self government. Konrad presents himself as a candidate for the position of Schoolmaster and soon has the townspeople, and the children, in his power.
After successfully transforming the school and its educational system, he puts himself forward for election as Mayor of Aln, and wins again. His power steadily grows and he starts to change everything about Aln. It isn't long before Konrad has himself crowned King and declares Aln to be the New Jerusalem. When the City hears about this they send troops to attack Aln. In time, Konrad is caught and put on trial.
James Rourke is an actor, musician, and writer. His short film, Act, won critical acclaim at festivals worldwide.
