Diana Cooke was “ born with the century” and came of age just after WWI. The daughter of landed Southern gentry, she knew early that her parents had only one asset, besides her: their stately house, Saratoga. But the Cookes were too land-poor to keep the house up, and without a rich husband, Diana could well lose the mansion that had defined her family for five generations.
Enter Captain Copperton, a stranger with no blood-line but plenty of cash. A Cooke-Copperton marriage seemed to be of benefit to everyone, except for one thing. Copperton was cruel as well as vulgar and Diana could hardly bear him.
