The Cape Henry Lighthouse was the first public works project of the new Federal Government. This collection of documents traces the history of the lighthouse from when it was first proposed in 1720, through construction, and during its operation as an aid to navigation at the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay until replaced in 1881.
