Since 1923 the Sammlung Tusculum has published authoritative editions of Greek and Latin works together with a German translation. The original texts are comprehensively annotated, and feature an introductory chapter. In the new volumes, additional essays delve into specific aspects of the works, illuminating their historical context and reception to the present day. In order to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the series, De Gruyter is proud to present Tusculum Online, an eBook package which contains all titles that appeared between 1923 and 2013 - a fitting tribute to an important part of German publishing history.

Die Achilleis ist das zweite Epos des kaiserzeitlichen Dichters Publius Papinius Statius. Angelegt als umfassende Lebensgeschichte des prototypischen epischen Helden Achill (es wäre die erste ihrer Art in der Antike gewesen!), gelangte das Werk wohl durch den Tod des Statius nicht über ein Fragment hinaus.

Es ist allerdings ein erstaunliches Fragment, nicht nur aufgrund seiner abgerundeten und feinsinnigen Ausarbeitung, sondern auch aufgrund seiner thematischen Ausrichtung: Geboten wird im Wesentlichen eine besondere Episode aus dem Leben Achills, nämlich sein Aufenthalt auf Scyros. Dort wurde er, als vermeintliche Tochter verkleidet, von seiner Mutter Thetis versteckt, um dem Trojanischen Krieg zu entgehen. Der junge Achill verliebt sich jedoch und wird schließlich von Odysseus enttarnt. Die Geschichte nimmt ihren Lauf und Achill zieht in den Krieg.

Ganz formvollendet und mit reichhaltigen Bezügen nicht nur zur epischen Tradition erzählt Statius eine zeitlos erscheinende Geschichte eines jungen Menschen auf der Suche nach seiner Identität und verleiht so einer prominenten mythologischen Figur neue Facetten. Die zweisprachige Ausgabe stellt erst die zweite Übersetzung ins Deutsche dar und wird durch eine ausführliche Einleitung und Erklärungen ergänzt, die die literarische Vielseitigkeit des Werkes erschließen.
