After years of running the fells, osteoarthritis took its toll on Mark's hip. Looking for a new direction, he embarked on a set of open water swimming lessons - and never looked back. Not only did this newfound passion give Mark a new lease of life into his sixties, it also sparked an academic interest into the benefits and risks associated with the sport. Fully illustrated throughout, and drawing on interviews with swimmers and coaches, ethnographic observations, and a growing body of inter-disciplinary research, the book examines how immersion in natural water environments influences mental health, physical resilience, nature connectedness, and social belonging. In doing so, it shares the joys, challenges, community, and unexpected lessons Mark and others have learned through swimming in blue spaces - including key safety tips, exploring issues such as after-drop, cold water shock, transient global amnesia and acclimatisation, and useful equipment. So whether dipping your toes for the first time or a seasoned swimmer, the book aims to inspire you to explore your own connection with the water, and through it, with yourself and the world around you.
"Finally, the science and language we've been waiting for. Dr Christie marries cutting-edge research with reverent storytelling, capturing what every cold open water swimmer knows: that buoyant centeredness, healing addiction, and spiritual connection to an otherworldly frequency. This book is a landmark in nature therapy - and a celebration of being gloriously alive." Dr Hélène Caron, PhD (ABD), cold water athlete, author, coach and motivational speaker
"As someone who has spent much of my life in open water, I thought I knew most of the reasons we keep coming back to it. One Man and His Tow Float showed me there was still plenty to learn. Mark Christie combines his personal story, the science behind the physical and psychological benefits of open-water swimming with entertaining and heartwarming stories from swimmers around the world, making this a great introduction for newcomers and an equally fascinating read for experienced open water and marathon swimmers. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to understand on a deeper level about why we love getting in the water." Rob Hutchings, author of 'Downriver Nomad'
"An excellent book that captures personal stories with the science and practical realities of open water swimming. Mark Christie provides a useful perspective on the appeal of open water swimming, both as a swimmer and a researcher. It is informative without being too technical, and the combination of experience, science and enthusiasm makes it accessible to all. I particularly liked the inclusion of interviews with a wide range of swimmers. A very worthwhile read and an easy five stars." Graeme Lowe, author 'A Life Well Swum'
