This is the first book by George Sand that he wrote alone, and it's not just a vivid romance-also it's a passionate cry for changing the unfair marriage rules in France at the time and for a fresh perspective on women. It relates the tale of a lovely and innocent young woman who marries an older guy at the age of sixteen. Although she quickly realises that her neighbor's love is very different from her own, she still falls in love with him. The first fresh translation since 1900, it fully captures the fervour and conviction of Sand's work, and the introduction thoroughly examines both the reaction to Sand at the time of her writing as well as current feminist interpretations.
