This book contains twenty-six fascinating studies of figures, most of whom played a significant role in the author's life over more than seventy years.
In his discussions of these figures, Hussein Ahmed Amin adhered to two principles:
First, his accounts were largely limited to his personal experiences and observations, rather than relying on hearsay or secondhand accounts.
Second, he echoed the words of the English poet Chause from "The Canterbury Tales":
Not all the vessels in the prince's palace / Are made of gold or silver. Thus, he presents the figures in all their complexity, with their flaws and virtues.
